FAQs

What is the Butterwick Apprentice?
The Butterwick Apprentice is a challenge that Butterwick House Children's Hospice is opening to all school children in the area. Interested pupils will enter the challenge via their schools or other children's group such as Scouts or Girl Guides. Each team will be given a sum of money relevant to their age and team size. The challenge is to use their skills to double, triple the money... or more.

How should a school deliver the challenge?
The key point is the flexibility of the challenge. We are very keen to work with the participating schools to make the challenge meet their requirements. The challenge must be suitable for all pupil ages and can be made adaptable to serve different areas of the school curriculum. It can also be organised as an after school club. Please do discuss this with us.

Who can enter the challenge?
Any pupil can take part in the challenge, from nursery-aged pupils to those in Further Education.

How many pupils are there per team?
There are no specific requirements in terms of team size and in practice this will depend upon the number of interested pupils and the way in which the school is delivering the challenge. For instance, there is no reason why the whole class cannot participate in one large group under the supervision of the teacher.

How much money will participating teams have?
This is dependent upon the age and size of the teams. The older the students are and/or the larger the team is, the greater the sum of money. The following sums are provided below as a very rough guide:

Age Range of Pupils

Sum of Money Range
Primary School Pupils Between £10 and £30
Years 7, 8 & 9 Between £20 and £50
Years 10 & 11 Between £25 and £75
Years 12 & 13/ F.E. Between £50 and £200
Higher Education Between £100 and £500

How much time will the challenge take?
In practice, this is dependent on two key factors: (1) the way in which the school is organising the challenge with the pupils (e.g. during a certain lesson on a timetable or as an after school club) and (2) on the type of activities the children wish to perform in order to meet the challenge.

How long will teams have to complete the challenge?
There is no set timetable or time-limit for the challenge. Schools can select start and finish times to suit them. Also, there is no reason why teams from the same school must conclude at the same time providing that this does not pose any problems for the school.

What support will participating schools/teams receive?
The support mechanism will be flexible to accommodate the nature of the challenge itself. The Butterwick fundraising team will be available to help in a number of ways, obviously depending on what type of support the school staff contact desires. Firstly and most importantly, we will always be contactable via telephone to discuss any issues or to offer any advice. We can support teams in other ways, for instance, we can visit the participating teams and assist them with their planning. In practice, when schools sign up to the scheme, the type of support required will be discussed and appropriate arrangements made.

What happens at the end of the challenge?
Once teams have completed the challenge we will arrange a presentation to collect the money raised. All participating children will receive a certificate recognising their achievements and contribution to the Butterwick House Children's Hospice.

What is the Butterwick House Children's Hospice?
Butterwick House Children's Hospice cares for children with life limiting illness from across the North East, offering a very homely and friendly environment to both the children and their loved ones. The Hospice is staffed by a brilliant team of professionals and volunteers who are entirely focused on enhancing young lives and supporting children's families through all the ups and downs involved in caring for a child with a life limiting illness.

What communities does the Butterwick House Children's Hospice serve?
We serve the communities of Teesside, County Durham, Wearside and North Yorkshire.

Where does the money from the challenge go?
The monies generated during the challenge will be donated to Butterwick House Children's Hospice to support its valuable work.

Why does the Butterwick House Children's Hospice need donations?
It costs approximately £800,000 every year to operate the Children's Hospice. All services are provided completely free of charge and the vast majority of our funding comes from the help and generosity of local people and businesses. Without this support we simply could not exist.

Why should I as a pupil take part?
First and foremost, the challenge should be great fun and we hope pupils will really enjoy the experience. In addition to this, by participating in the scheme pupils will develop a number of skills that will be very useful to them, such as how to work in a team, how to plan and deliver an event and how to use one's imagination to be creative and achieve results. Moreover, involvement in the challenge will afford a greater knowledge and understanding of the fundamental workings of business and enterprise. Finally, by taking the challenge pupils will be helping to support the vital work of the Butterwick House Children's Hospice.

How do I enter a team(s)?
Please complete the Registration form on-line and return it to us. The fundraising department will then get in touch to formalise the agreement and to ensure we offer the support you desire.
